Puppy Love

I fell in love tonight with a 6 week old puggle (pug/beagle cross). He is a beautiful chocolate-colored pup with blackish detailing around his face and feet. He was sooo handsome, sleeping and twitching in his little cage. I asked the clerk if I could hold him... and yep, that's when cupid struck. He licked my chin until exfoliation was no longer necessary and he had that sweet puppy smell. His long ears flopped, and more often than not, he stepped on them. When I set him on the floor, he pounced and ran in circles, and came running back to me, with his giant tiny paws pouncing into my lap. He crawled under some shelving and found dust bunnies and some plastic pieces he thought he could chew on. When I pulled him from beneath the shelving, he had dust bunnies stuck in his whiskers.

When I held him, he sat quietly with me, looking at the world around him. I walked him around the store and showed him the fish and birds and ferrets. His beautiful black puppy eyes sucked in everything around him, and his concentration was never broken unless I kissed his velvet ears. Then he would resume licking the heck out of my chin and making me fall head over heels in love.

I named him Henry. He had super soft fur and excess wrinkles, giving him an old-man look, so the name seemed appropriate. The price tag in the window of his cage was a bit steep for me, especially lately with the holidays coming up, etc. Also, my landlady isn't so sure she is prepared to deal with potty training and barking in the middle of her Walker Texas Ranger episodes. (hehehehe)

So, tonight, Henry sleeps alone in his cage.

I wish I could fall in love with people as easily as I fell in love with Henry. But then again, Henry loved me and kissed me despite my stench from a previous workout at the gym and raggy clothes. My lack of makeup and skewed ponytail didn't seem to matter to him at all. He was as excited to see me and come running into my lap as Homer is to find a donut.

Love comes so easily when there is no threat of pain or heartache. Love comes so easily when it is so easily returned.

"They made the weather, and then they stand in the rain and say, 'Shit! It's raining!'"
(Ruby on Cold Mountain)

How many times have I made my own weather and then complained it's raining?
